International Women’s Day (IWD)
Theme 2023: “Digital: Innovation and technology for gender equality.”
Promoting women’s equal and effective participation in political decision-making remains a global challenge, with women under-represented as leaders in politics, government, business and society. In Kenya, women continue to be marginalized in many areas of society, especially in leadership and political decision-making. The ‘Ambassador for the Day’ competition aims to inspire young women by creating an opportunity for them to step into the shoes of leadership. The competition serves to promote greater gender equality by building ambition, inspiration and momentum for a new generation of female leaders.
The ‘Ambassador for a Day’ competition is open for young women and girls living in Kenya involved in research, science, tech and innovation (aged 18-25 years old) at the time of application.
How to enter
Are you ready to be our Ambassador for a Day? This competition is for young women living in Kenya who are 18 – 25 years old from across the country who are either in tertiary education or active within the science, tech and innovation sectors. We are committed to an inclusive process and encourage candidates of any race, ethnicity, religion, income, geography, sexual orientation, and disability. There will be one winner selected per participating mission. Reasonable travel, accommodation and subsistence expenses will be covered for selected winners.
Process
You can participate by submitting a one-minute video that answers the question – “If I were Ambassador for a Day, the key gender equality issue in Kenya I would like to address is…”. Record your take and send it to us by 23:59 on 21 March 2023. The selected winners will be made at the discretion of the participating missions. They will consider the applicant’s understanding of the issues, communication skills and sense of passion for gender equality. Only one entry will be accepted per person. Entries longer than one minute will be disqualified.
Winners’ Prize
Winners will be given the opportunity to spend a day acting as an Ambassador/High Commissioner of one of participating missions, accompanying them to working meetings and participating in events. They will also have the opportunity to participate in interviews and share their experiences on social media. Winners will receive an award certificate. There will be no financial reward for participating or winning. This year’s competition will consist of the following missions: Costa Rica, Germany, UNDP, the Netherlands, the United States of America and the United Kingdom. The final date and schedule for the day of shadowing will be agreed between the winner and their mission.
